A Plus Food Training offers Allergen Awareness, Food Handler, Food Manager, BASSET (Alcohol), and Sexual Harassment Prevention training courses.  The Allergen Awareness, Food Handler, Food Manager, and Sexual Harassment Prevention courses have an accreditation issued by the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB). The BASSET course is approved by the Illinois Liquor Commission.

The training programs can be taken by any individual seeking to learn about food safety. The individual should possess basic literacy skills (reading, writing, comprehension) in English or Spanish at the 8th-grade level.

The training courses and assessments are created and taught by foodservice professionals and experts in the industry with over 20 years of experience.  Additionally, these individuals have experience working in education creating curriculum, and teaching students. With their vast knowledge and experience in both the food industry and education, their training courses will prepare you for success.

Once an individual enrolls in a course, they will have access to the Student Learning Management System (LMS).  The individual will complete the online course in this system. They will have access to all the information regarding their course, progress, and certificate information in the LMS.

Food Handler Training Course

In many states, food handlers must have a Food Handler certificate within 30 days of hire from a program that has an accreditation issued by the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB).  An individual who possesses a Food Manager Certificate does NOT need to obtain a Food Handler certificate.

A food handler is defined by law as a food employee who works with unpackaged food, food equipment or utensils, or food-contact surfaces. This includes servers, chefs, cooks, bussers, bartenders, dishwashers, and hosts/hostesses who handle food, utensils, or food-contact surfaces.

The Food Handler Training Course is a 2-hour course developed by A Plus Food Training L.L.C. This training course has an accreditation issued by the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB) and is an approved course that meets the state requirements of the Department of Public Health. The course content follows the FDA Food Code (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) to ensure that important topics on food safety are covered.

A Food Handler Certificate will be issued if the student scores 75% or higher on the final assessment. The final assessment contains 40 multiple-choice and true/false questions.  The certificate is valid for three years. The certificate will be issued to the individual who took the course and passed the assessment.  The certificate shall not be transferable to another learner. Learners can retake an assessment up to 3 times.

The topics of this course include foodborne illnesses and hazards, personal hygiene and food safety, time and temperature control, cleaning and sanitizing equipment and surfaces, thermometers, cross-contamination, storing food and non-food items, food allergens, pests, and dishwashing.

The learning outcomes of the course include the following:

  • Understand how to prevent foodborne illnesses and keep food safe
  • Identify good personal hygiene techniques
  • Identify the three potential contaminants that can affect food
  • Understand the importance of time and temperature requirements
  • Describe techniques for cleaning and sanitizing surfaces and equipment
  • Identify the types of thermometers and how to properly use them
  • Understand how to prevent cross-contamination
  • Understand how to store food and non-food items
  • Identify common food allergens and how to prevent allergic reactions
  • Identify how to keep pests from entering establishment
  • Discuss proper methods and temperatures for cooking, storing, cooling, and reheating foods

Students may refer to their certificate as a “Food Handler Certificate” granted by A Plus Food Training L.L.C.  This certificate indicates that the student met the food training requirements set forth by the Illinois Department of Public Health (410 ILCS 625/) Food Handling Regulation Enforcement Act.

All students must take the training course before the assessment is taken.  The training course cannot be waived under any circumstance.

The online course is $15. The instructor-led course is $50.

Food Manager (Sanitation) Course

All food managers must complete an 8-hour course and an exam every 5 years. Students will be issued a ServSafe® Manager certificate if the student scores 75% or higher on the exam. The certificate is valid for five years. The topics of this course include the importance of food safety, good personal hygiene, time and temperature control, preventing cross-contamination, cleaning and sanitizing, safe food preparation, receiving and storing food, methods of thawing, cooking, cooling, and reheating food, HACCP, and food safety regulations.  The cost of the class is $205.

BASSET (Beverage Alcohol Sellers and Servers Education and Training) Class

This is a 4-hour course that provides the fundamentals of responsible alcohol service.  Students will be issued a certificate from A Plus Food Training and a BASSET card if the student scores 75% or higher on the exam. The certificate is valid for three years. The topics of this course include alcohol laws and responsibilities, recognizing and preventing intoxication, checking identification, and dealing with difficult situations. The cost of the class is $60.

This course is approved by the Illinois Liquor Commission.

Allergen Awareness Training Class

This is a 1-hour course that provides information about the importance of allergen awareness. Students will learn about the safety measures for preparing food and serving customers with food allergies. Students will learn about the following topics: major allergens, allergic reactions, communicating with guests, preventing cross-contact, proper cleaning methods, communicating with guests, proper food preparation, and food labels.

The learning outcomes of the course include the following:

  • Define food allergy
  • Identify the symptoms of an allergic reaction Identify the major food allergens
  • Examine the dangers of allergens and how to prevent cross-contact
  • Describe the proper cleaning methods to prevent allergen contamination
  • Discuss how and when to communicate to guests and staff about allergens
  • Understand the special considerations related to allergens from workstations and self-service areas
  • Explain how to handle special dietary requests
  • Discuss how to deal with emergencies, including allergic reactions
  • Discuss the importance of food labels
  • Explain how to handle food deliveries in relation to allergens
  • Examine proper food preparation for guests with food allergens
  • Discuss cleaning and personal hygiene considerations to prevent contaminating food with allergens

All Illinois employers, including restaurants and bars, must provide sexual harassment prevention training to their employees every year. This is a 1-hour online course that provides information about sexual harassment prevention.

The learning outcomes of this course include the following:

  • Explanation of sexual harassment
  • Conduct that constitutes unlawful sexual harassment
  • Federal and State statutory provisions concerning sexual harassment
  • Responsibilities of employers in the prevention, investigation, and corrective measures of sexual harassment

This class can be taken by any individual who is seeking to learn about sexual harassment prevention. The individual should possess basic literacy skills (reading, writing, comprehension) in English or Spanish at the 8th-grade level.

A Sexual Harassment Prevention Training Certificate will be issued if the student scores 80% or higher on the final assessment. The final assessment contains 10 multiple-choice and true/false questions. The certificate is valid for one year. The certificate will be issued to the individual who took the course and passed the assessment.  The certificate shall not be transferable to another learner.  Learners can retake an assessment up to 3 times.

All students must take the training course before the assessment is taken.  The training course cannot be waived under any circumstance.

Students may refer to their certificate as a “Sexual Harassment Prevention Training  Certificate” granted by A Plus Food Training L.L.C.

Assessment Results

If an individual attended an instructor-led training:

  • Assessment results will be available within 5 business days of the course date.
  • Assessment results will be sent via email and will include the certificate if the student passed the assessment.

If an individual attended an online training:

  • Assessment results are available immediately upon completion of the assessment in the Learning Management System (LMS).
  • Certificates can be downloaded directly from the course.
  • Certificates will also be sent via email if the student passed the assessment.
