A Plus Food Training is offering Food Handler, Food Manager, and BASSET (Alcohol) training courses to food and bar service workers.

Food Handler Course for Non-Restaurants

The State of Illinois passed into law the Illinois Food Handling Regulation Enforcement Act. All food service workers in non-restaurants, such as grocery stores, schools, hospitals, must be certified by July 1, 2016. An individual who possesses an Illinois Food Service Sanitation Manager Certificate (FSSMC) does NOT need to obtain a Food Handler certificate.

The Food Handler Course for Non-Restaurants is a 3-hour course developed by A Plus Food Training. This program is approved by the State of Illinois Department of Public Health. A Food Handler Certificate for Non-Restaurants will be issued if the student scores 70% or higher on the final assessment. The certificate is valid for three years. The cost of the class is $15. The topics of this course include: Foodborne Illnesses and Hazards, Personal Hygiene and Food Safety, Time and Temperature Control, Cleaning and Sanitizing Equipment and Surfaces, Thermometers, Cross Contamination, Storing Food and Non-Food Items, Food Allergens, Pests, and Dishwashing.

Food Handler Course for Restaurants

The State of Illinois passed into law the Illinois Food Handling Regulation Enforcement Act. Beginning July 1, 2014, all food handlers working in a restaurant must have an ANSI Accredited Food Handler certificate within 30 days from the date of hire. An individual who possesses an Illinois Food Service Sanitation Manager Certificate (FSSMC) does NOT need to obtain a Food Handler certificate.

A food handler is defined by law as a food employee who works with unpackaged food, food equipment or utensils, or food-contact surfaces. This includes servers, chefs, cooks, bussers, bartenders, dishwashers, and hosts/hostesses who handle food, utensils, or food-contact surfaces.

All food handlers must complete a 3 hour course which includes an exam. A ServSafe ® Food Handler certificate will be issued if the student scores 70% or higher. The certificate is valid for three years. The cost of the class is $40. The topics of this course include: Food Safety, Personal Hygiene, Controlling Time and Temperature Control, Preventing Cross Contamination, and Cleaning and Sanitizing.

Food Manager (Sanitation) Class

Effective 7/1/14, all managers must complete an 8 hour course and an exam every 5 years. Recertification courses are no longer accepted. Students will be issued a ServSafe® Manager certificate and the Illinois Food Service Sanitation Manager Certificate (FSSMC) if the student scores 75% or higher on the exam. The certificate is valid for five years. The topics of this course include: Importance of Food Safety, Good Personal Hygiene, Time and Temperature Control, Preventing Cross Contamination, Cleaning and Sanitizing, Safe Food Preparation, Receiving and Storing Food, Methods of Thawing, Cooking, Cooling and Reheating Food, HACCP, and Food Safety Regulations.  The cost of the class is $190.

BASSET (Beverage Alcohol Sellers and Servers Education and Training) Class

This is a 4 hour course that provides the fundamentals of responsible alcohol service.  Effective 7/1/15, all on-premise alcohol servers and bouncers in Cook County are required to receive BASSET certification.  Students will be issued a ServSafe ® Alcohol certificate and a BASSET card if the student scores 75% or higher on the exam. The certificate is valid for three years. The topics of this course include: alcohol laws and responsibilities, recognizing and preventing intoxication, checking identification, and dealing with difficult situations. The cost of the class is $50.
